Step One: Find Your Serial Number
STEINWAY GRAND PIANOS
- open the lid and look inside the piano
- locate the cast iron plate near the tuning pins
- the serial number is stamped clearly onto the plate
- it is almost always located inside of the triangular inset (known as the “coffin”)

STEINWAY UPRIGHT PIANOS
- open the top lid
- inspect the cast iron plate inside the cabinet
- the serial number is typically near the tuning pin area
- in some early uprights, placement may vary

DO NOT USE THESE NUMBERS
Do not use the model name or model number shown near the serial number, such as M, K, or 100.
Do not use patent dates.
Do not use unrelated case or component markings.
Enter every digit of the serial number, especially on later pianos with longer numbers.
Do not use the Steinway & Sons lookup for Boston or Essex pianos; they use different serial-number systems.
